Pakistan and other South Asian Ministers call to tackle climate change

New Delhi :  Ministers from South Asian countries including Pakistan unanimously called for regional co-operation and immediate action on climate change, and urged corporates to join hands in this effort.

At Ministerial session on Sustainable Management of Global Commons in South Asia, part of  Sustainable Development Summit, Ministers said there were huge costs in environmental capital due to climate change, especially in the region which is most vulnerable. Moderated by Dr Kandeh K Yumkella, Director General, UN Industrial Development Organization UNIDO, it was attended by Ministers of Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, representatives of India & Pakistan. Dr Yumkella said Asia will account for 50% of global GDP by 2050 and to achieve it, sustainable management of global commons would be crucial.

Pakistan’s Malik Amin Aslam spoke of various natural disasters his country faced. He said despite being one of lowest emitters, Pakistan was highly vulnerable to climate change. The cost of adaptation for Pakistan could be as high as 3-5% of GDP, he said.
