Aqeel clinches IC Tennis title

Karachi : Favorite Aqeel Khan found little resistance from his younger sibling Yasir Khan in the final and recorded a straight set win to clinch IC Trophy Championship men s title here Wednesday at Karachi Gymkhana.

The Davis Cup hero, Aqeel took the first set 6-1 and after little work also took the second by 6-4 score to claim the title as expected.

Meanwhile, Saba Aziz clinched ladies singles title after beating Sara Mansoor in the final of the event. Saba registered a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

Nofil Kaleem zapped Dawar Rehan recording a formidable 6-3, 6-0 triumph to claim U14 singles title.

Adil Kohari dropped a set against Ahmed Babar before registering a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win to claim U18 men s singles title.

Pakistan coach and Davis Cup team non-playing captain Rashid Malik said that though there is little to learn from these tournaments for players like Aqeel, Jalil or Yasir but at least it helps in promoting the game of tennis and infusing enthusiasm among youngsters.

Activities are important as it helps in promoting the game, Rashid told PPI. Top players like Aqeel may not have to learn from these tournaments as they faces the same opponents they have been playing against since their childhood but at least they got a revision, he added.
